Modal adds OutboundPolicy header replacement for Sandboxes
The Python SDK gains modal.OutboundPolicy with with_header_replacement, a Sandbox create() outbound_policy parameter, and Sandbox.update_outbound_policy() to replace the policy on a running Sandbox (only for Sandboxes created with one). Header values support $KEY templating from a named Secret; secrets never enter the Sandbox and are injected outside the container. Domains support *. wildcard prefixes and a bare *.
Modal adds session affinity for endpoint request routing
New documentation across Shared and Dedicated Endpoints introduces session affinity: clients send a Modal-Session-Id header with each request of a conversation, and the router keeps those requests on the container most likely to hold the prompt prefix in its KV cache. Guidance covers one ID per conversation, starting a new ID when the prefix changes (e.g. after compaction), and re-routing when endpoints scale or containers are replaced. Corroborated by the Shared Endpoints 'Session affinity' and 'Request routing' sections and the Dedicated Endpoints 'Request routing' section.
modal function logs gains --all-variants flag
`modal function logs` now limits logs to the specified ID by default; passing `--all-variants` includes logs from the base function and all its variants, even when a variant ID is specified.
Modal adds per-Environment blocking of unauthenticated URLs
Workspace Managers can now prevent deployments in an Environment from exposing unauthenticated endpoints (Endpoints created with --unauthenticated, Servers with unauthenticated=True, Web Functions without requires_proxy_auth=True). A workspace-level default applies to every Environment unless overridden; each Environment can inherit, block, or allow. When blocking is in effect, modal deploy, modal endpoint create, and Dashboard endpoint creation fail unless proxy auth is required.
Function SDK gains stats() for historical time-range statistics
The Python SDK adds Function.stats(since, until, container), returning a redefined FunctionStats object holding historical statistics for a time range (default last hour, maximum 7 days): input success/failure/timeout counts, running-at-end counts, container started/error counts, and percentile distributions for inputs and containers. get_current_stats now returns a new FunctionCurrentStats snapshot type (backlog, num_total_runners, num_running_inputs, input_headroom), and new StatsPercentile / StatsPercentileDistribution / ServerInfo types are documented.
Sandboxes tab adds per-Sandbox resource metrics for request sizing
The Sandboxes tab on an App page now exposes resource-sizing charts: CPU Per Sandbox and Memory Per Sandbox show percentiles of actual usage, CPU Pressure Per Sandbox tracks time Sandboxes spent stalled waiting for CPU, and Exit Reasons tracks Sandboxes evicted while exceeding their memory request. The request-tuning guide is rewritten around these metrics with a recommended workflow (start from defaults, observe usage, set p50-75 CPU / p90-95 memory, confirm throttling and evictions are acceptable).
New modal function CLI command for logs and aggregate statistics
The CLI gains a 'modal function' command group with 'logs' (fetch or live-stream Function logs with --since/--until time ranges, --tail, --search, --source, --container and --function-call filters, timestamp and ID prefixes) and 'stats' (aggregate statistics for a Function ID or deployed name, with --all-variants, --container, time ranges and --json output). Listed in the CLI command table.

Server handle gains info() for resource and configuration overview
The Server Python handle adds info(refresh=False), returning a new modal.types.ServerInfo dataclass with the Server's CPU and memory requests, GPUs, ephemeral disk, nonpreemptible flag, compute regions, cloud, volumes, cloud bucket mounts, secrets and HTTP config. Performs a network request for remote lookups or when refresh=True.
VM Sandboxes can run a custom init system such as systemd as PID 1
New 'Running custom init systems' section: the vm_init experimental option takes an absolute path (typically /sbin/init) to run a conventional init system such as systemd or openrc as PID 1 inside a VM Sandbox instead of Modal's default init, with Modal's agent running alongside it. Includes a systemd example with a readiness probe via systemctl is-system-running.
Claude Code can now connect to Modal Shared Endpoints
Endpoint integrations docs add a Claude Code section alongside OpenCode and Codex: Claude Code connects to Shared Endpoints through https://inference.us-west.modal.direct using a Proxy Token in combined wk-<id>.ws-<secret> form, with ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and per-model ANTHROPIC_*_MODEL environment variables pointing at the Endpoint hostname. Anthropic was already an integrated partner; this extends the documented coding-agent surface.
Modal adds user groups (Beta) for environment-level RBAC
New User groups (Beta) documentation under workspace management: groups let Workspace Owners/Managers assign Environment Roles (Contributor / Viewer / No Access) to multiple members at once in Restricted Environments. Two group types: custom groups created and managed in Modal, and SCIM groups pushed by the customer's IdP whose name and membership stay IdP-managed while Modal remains the source of truth for Environment access. Role resolution is documented: direct or group roles take precedence over the environment default, the most permissive role wins among multiple assignments, and Owners/Managers always have Contributor. Requires RBAC on Team and Enterprise plans.
